netVigilance, Inc. Releases Winny Single Scanner.

Japanese Peer-to-peer software Detection freely available

PORTLAND, Oregon -- February 25, 2008- netVigilance, Inc., the Windows-based leader in network Vulnerability Assessment (VA) has released the S4 SecureScout Single Scanner for Winny detection.

"Japanese companies have been plagued for years with the peer-to-peer software Winny, it has been attributed to hackers breaking into Nuclear power plants in Japan, and has received extensive media coverage." explains Jesper Jurcenoks of netVigilance and he continues "netVigilance is the first Vulnerability Assessment company to release a Winny Scanner for free with general availability to the worldwide market."

Not only is the Winny peer to peer program against corporate policy in many companies for its use in illegal file sharing, it also contains a number of vulnerabilities that have been successfully exploited for break in. Unlike other file sharing networks like Napster, kaazaa, eDonkey, Torrent etc. that are relatively easy to detect, we find that Winny specifically has been designed to be stealthy and hard to detect. With no default installation directory, no registry key, no fixed port and encrypted traffic, Winny detection is quite a challenge.
